These are my 10 favorite songs of the year as we have reached the midpoint of 2012. Criteria: must have been downloaded by me in 2012.
Here we go!
10. This Is Cray by Basic Physics (Chrizz Luvly x Carly Rae Jepsen x Kanye West x Jessie J) and Call Me Greyhound (Bootleg) by Kap Slap (Carly Rae Japsen x Swedish House Mafia)
Number ten and I’m already cheating! These are my two favorite Call Me Maybe remix/mashups and I usually play them back to back. It’s an addicting song but the original is too overplayed me thinks. Also, I get the benefit of a little Jessie J, a legendary verse from Ye, and punny titles.
9. Paris by Lana Del Rey
Just got this recently and it’s my first foray into the Lana Del Rey experience. I believe it won’t be my last! Also, this song touches on my romantical sentimentality and yearning to go to Paris.
8. Pyramids by Frank Ocean
It kills me to put this song so low but I just got it yesterday so it hasn’t been under the same playability scrutiny. It is an epic by Frank Ocean and the best album of the year is on the way! So much metaphor in this song I had to brush up on Egyptian history. Honorable mention to White.
7. Merry Go Round by Andre Merritt
I already talked about my Andre Merritt love but yeah, catchy hook and interesting song metaphor.
6. Mercy by Kanye West ft. Big Sean, Pusha T, & 2 Chainz
Who the hell is 2 Chainz!? One of my favorite Big Sean verses, solid Pusha, Kanye braggadocio at it’s peak, and that Kanye triple-double can’t be stopped.
5. Twilight by Cover Drive and Twilight (Remix) by Abel Miller
Number one in the UK a while ago, they should be coming to America soon haha. Fantastic remix that is on the same level as the original!
4. Story by Che’Nelle
No idea who she is other than an Australian Jpop star or something, but the first line of this song is already a killer and it’s a terrific bilingual song that sounds terrific. The English and Japanese are so seamless and the story of the song is adorbsables. *pun* Check out Here on Earth by Chrishan ft. Che’Nelle for more!
3. Blue by Big Bang
Couldn’t have asked for a better single from Big Bang than this sad song that stays off the dancefloor. Since I don’t know what they’re saying I could play it all day, a la Wedding Dress.
2. The Good, The Bad, The Ugly by Consequence ft. Kanye West
Been playing this song non-stop since I stumbled upon it a month ago or so. I’m so late on this song it’s not even funny, but one of the best rap songs I’ve heard. Ye provides a niceeee hook and a solid verse but Consequence amazes lyrically. He’s on the top of his game and it’s entertaining trying to keep up with the underrated emcee.
1. Heart Attack by Trey Songz
Song of the half-year goes to Trey Songz! You know I love sad songs and Trey tears his and all the listeners hearts out on this track. It’s been a while since I heard classic Trey RnB so this was a particularly delightful track. I could play it all day just to soak in the sadness. I knew with the first Trey wails that this would be a good one. The fbombs bring the song to life as well. Of course a sad song takes number 1!
What I miss? :)
